Perry St. of Manhattan- An attempt at Sophisticated

I don’t like to mention the price when I’m considering food, because regardless of price food should be good and a worthwhile experience at every level of finance. Perry St Chef, and Proprietor, Cedric and Jean-Georges Vongerichten created dishes that assumed a level of excellence their presentation and flavor could not match. I’ll concede to The New York Times in their opinion that despite accolades and past success Perry St is, “…undeniably flawed and surprisingly inconsistent…”

Perry St., Meatpacking District, Manhattan, NYC

Every dish tasted just missed a beat. The best entree on the table was a toss up between the slow cooked scottish salmon and the butter poached lobster- but I cant praise them highly. I have had varying degrees of better made, more appropriately paired, and creatively presented- the best presentation goes to the crispy egg caviar dish served with vodka cream sauce.
The fried chicken I tasted from two different entrees were dry and chewy, the Scotch bonnet sauce it was served with created too much heat in the flavor and it was just down right watery.
For the fish based entrees: The Bass was tender but there was little flavor aside from overly salty and charred. The Chili Oil Roasted Hake was overcooked but the upside was that it’s sauce with fava beans and saffron made it palatable.
The desert were mostly disappointing and hardly worth mentioning; the exception was the profiteroles which were served with vanilla ice cream, peanut brittle and chocolate sauce. We also tried the Baba au rum, which was essentially a sponge cake, set on fire by rum poured on top.
It’s really a shame that our party came with such high expectations and had to leave unsettled.

  • Fresh Catch of the Day: Cod and it came with a good portion of sautéed spinach, $32 dollars.
  • Light 6-piece, Classic California roll, $14
  • Kale with Peanut Vinaigrette Side-Dish, $7
  • Steamed Green Beans Side-Dish, $7
  • Yellowtail Sashimi and Kale Salad, $23


The service was rushed and the waitress had this oozing insincerity, only matched by the quickness she cleared the table as soon as the last bite had been taken; getting to the table was an obscure, casino like maze. I was rather confused at the basket of warm, moist towels (rolls? no, rolls, towels.) we received when we sat down; wait, are we ordering ribs…what am I missing here, Hillstone?
The, ‘Very Fresh Catch of the Day’ was indeed fresh, and had great flavor and perfectly cooked, flakey and light as cod should be, however, the sautéed spinach was an imperfect pair. They both were heavy and rather greasy and did not compliment each other. The last bit of contention was the price- how could Salmon be more affordable than Cod?
However, let me get to the main source of my consternation: At our table of 4, we each requested individually, for our meals to be light on salt, and easy on the oil. Our request was flatly denied. Our meals were all heavily oiled and salty save the steamed green beans.


Hillstone, I can see the elegance and sophistication with the sharp, snap-to, front-house service, and I can understand the idea of ambiance, albeit a very dark ambience, and I appreciate the food, it all was fresh and well-prepared but the whole package just seems to extreme: too sharp, too dark, too rich.
If I were to return in the future, I would order the steak, ribs or Hamburger instead of the fish and vegetable based fare.

One more for Raglan Public House- Thanksgiving Sando

The special of the month is the Thanksgiving Sando-
A sandwich of toasted, buttery sourdough with melty-Brie smashed between spiced meaty stuffing, thick cuts of roasted and juicy turkey, finished with that tangy sweet homemade cranberry relish; it hits and hits and hits! This stuff is what the season is about and I am stoked to see the local spot has caught on too.
Wait a second, did I mention the savory dipping gravy that comes with?- I have a suspicion they’re using a tasty secret ingredient which I’ll divulge- beer! That is some good dipping gravy, friends.
Comes with hand-cut potato chips and a few crinkle-cut pickle chips that you can slap on for an extra zing.

It seems that good things come in 3’s and Raglans, Monday through Friday lunch special is no exception.

A freshly prepared ground beef burger on an artisan bun called the, “Queenstown Fave”, served with a handful of thin-cut, fried crispy, black peppered seasoned fries, all grounded by a mighty refreshing pint of German styled wheat beer, Hefeweisen, was today’s lunch sampling.

The pros: prime and juicy burger cooked to order, excellent house burger sauces ranging from sweet and tangy to a smokey jerk style. The Queenstown Fave burger came slathered with a tangy sweet aoli with some special BBQ sauce. Melted Edame cheese brought it all to complete. Also the artisan herb encrusted bun was a complimenting-hit.

The fries were golden, not soggy and well seasoned.

And the beer just took it all home-

Dinner:

The Shackburger with french fries and a thick milkshake- simple and delicious. Come check out why there’s a line for an almost inconspicuous shack in a park by the famous flat iron building in NYC’s, Manhattan. What’s better, an In N’ Out Burger or a Shake Shack? That question for me is like asking me about a rivalry between the east and west coast. But I’ll tell you a secret: nobody beats the east coast for sandwiches and #burgers.
